Getting started

Five steps back to school

Pick a program with a clear job at the end

Your local American Job Center can tell you which training programs WIOA funds can pay for where you live.

File the FAFSA as an independent student

If you were born before January 1, 2004, the 2027-28 FAFSA counts you as independent. It's free at studentaid.gov.

Ask HR about tuition help

If you're working, an employer educational assistance program can cover up to $5,250 a year tax-free.

Apply to the awards written for you

Rankin (35 and older) closes in February 2027. Soroptimist's Live Your Dream Awards close in November.

Ask about credit for what you already know

Many colleges give credit for prior learning, work experience or old transcripts. Fewer credits needed means less to pay for.

How to spot a scholarship scam

  • You're asked to pay. The FTC's advice: never pay to apply for a scholarship, and treat "processing" or "redemption" fees as a red flag.
  • It's guaranteed. No real sponsor guarantees an award or offers a money-back promise.
  • Someone charges to file your FAFSA. The FAFSA is free at studentaid.gov. Never share your FSA ID.
  • They want bank or card details "to confirm eligibility," or say you're a finalist for something you never entered.
  • "Government grants for moms" ads. Federal grants come through the FAFSA, not through a third-party sign-up page.

Read the FTC's How To Avoid Scholarship and Financial Aid Scams, and report scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Questions

Questions women ask us

Are there scholarships for women over 40?

Yes. The Jeannette Rankin National Scholar Grant is only for women 35 and older, and gives up to $3,000 a year, renewable for up to five years, per the sponsor's site as of Nov 2026. Most other scholarships, and Pell Grants, have no upper age limit.

Can a 50-year-old woman get a Pell Grant?

Yes, if she has financial need and hasn't earned a bachelor's degree. The Department of Education doesn't set an age limit for Pell.

Am I an independent student on the FAFSA if I'm over 24?

On the 2027-28 FAFSA, being born before January 1, 2004 is one of the questions that makes you independent, so your parents' information isn't needed.
